Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence Framework for an Equitable World | Artificial intelligence technologies have been in the news for some time, often with sensational stories of incredible promises, disastrous impact, or even world-ending doom. In 2023, NTEN and our partners at Institute For the Future began a community process to convene dozens of people from diverse nonprofit missions, foundations, technology companies, and nonprofit advisors. Through this community process, we surfaced a few key points:

Fairly Trained
| Fairly Trained exists to make it clear which companies take a more consent-based approach to training, and are therefore treating creators more fairly. | https://www.fairlytrained.org/ | |
Glaze | Glaze is a system designed to protect human artists by disrupting style mimicry. At a high level, Glaze works by understanding the AI models that are training on human art, and using machine learning algorithms, computing a set of minimal changes to artworks, such that it appears unchanged to human eyes, but appears to AI models like a dramatically different art style. For example, human eyes might find a glazed charcoal portrait with a realism style to be unchanged, but an AI model might see the glazed version as a modern abstract style, a la Jackson Pollock. So when someone then prompts the model to generate art mimicking the charcoal artist, they will get something quite different from what they expected. | https://glaze.cs.uchicago.edu/what-is-glaze.html

This collaborative team will explore, create, disseminate and share ideas about cutting edge technologies that produce bodies in virtual and augmented reality. | https://www.knowthyself.ualberta.ca/

Performance Excellence Through Cognitive Diversity in the Boardroom | Diversity of thought is implicit and omnipresent and is directly corelated to the dynamics of difference within a group. On any given day, teams are tasked with problem solving and they must tap into their mental diversity framework, which helps them define, analyze, assess risks, review processes, and ultimately have a positive outcome. Our life experience, history, genetics, and socioeconomic status all contribute to this framework. To achieve performance excellence, organizations must move away from the monocultural environment. | https://charityvillage.com/performance-excellence-through-cognitive-diversity-in-the-boardroom/
Five Good Ideas for aspiring board directors | Boards and directors are coming under increased pressure to be “on top of their game.” This involves a clear understanding of their fiduciary duty and duty of care, the foundational elements of good governance. In addition, modern governance involves a commitment to EDI and ESG – and ensuring that these principles are included in their governance structure. All this while continuing their responsibilities of oversight in regards to sustaining the long-term viability of the organization, and the monitoring of risks the organization faces. Richard Powers, Associate Professor at the Rotman School of Management, presents his five good ideas on how new and seasoned board directors can better manage their roles and contribute in a more meaningful way to the organizations they represent | https://maytree.com/five-good-ideas/five-good-ideas-for-aspiring-board-directors/?mc_cid=acab762b1b&mc_eid=e9291c2c0f

The Default Nonprofit Board Model is Archaic and Toxic | We have been in denial about the destructiveness of our sector’s default board model. Over the years, we have developed a learned helplessness, thinking that this model is the only one we have. So we put up with it, grumbling to our colleagues and working to mitigate our challenges, for instance figuring out ways to bring good board members on to neutralize bad ones or having more trainings or meetings to increase “board engagement.” | https://nonprofitaf.com/2020/07/the-default-nonprofit-board-model-is-archaic-and-toxic-lets-try-some-new-models/
Equity, Power and the Future of the Nonprofit Sector | These are complex times that are shrinking or stretching resources, challenging organizations to do things differently, and presenting opportunities for innovation. Nonprofit leaders are beginning to see that the governance of organizations sits within a larger context of equity, power, and the future of the nonprofit sector. Nonprofit governance is not consistently meeting the needs of the sector and needs to be reimagined – but how do we get there? | https://theonn.ca/equity-power-and-the-future-of-the-nonprofit-sector/ |
